A journey through the decade

 “The world is a stage”
Indeed a place full of surprises and events that lie beyond our expectations.

At the beginning of the decade, no one would’ve envisioned the changes that took place. This decade saw Leanardo Di Caprio finally winning his first Oscar,  a 16-year-old Swedish deliver a speech in the UN that shook the entire world and what not. No one could’ve predicted that India would launch twin surgical strikes on Pakistan in the gap of two years. This decade was witness to so many technological and social changes which have changed the world forever.
The great nation of India saw itself become a leader in the world economy and boosted by the initiatives taken by those at power saw itself emerge as a nation to be reckoned with in the eyes of the world. Boosted by an ever-opening world economy, start-ups in India finally boomed and we were bystanders to multi-million investments by foreign investors.
The decade which began with India hosting the 2010 commonwealth games and ended with disappointment in the 2019 50-over World Cup was a whirlwind of emotions for the nation. In 2018 Hima Das became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships and PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win a gold in the badminton championships the decade was full of firsts for India. The Indian women cricket team finally let themselves be considered a force to be reckoned with when they reached the finals of the 2017 women’s ODI World Cup.
The sporting achievements were complemented by changes in society. On 6 September 2018, in a landmark, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the application of Section 377 to consensual homosexual sex between adults was unconstitutional, "irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary". In 2014 India successfully eradicated polio by not registering a polio case in over two years and in 2019 the nation got its’ first female fighter pilot. The nation also witnessed ISRO make history not once but multiple times and in 2019 was responsible for the entire nation stopping everything and eagerly wait for the launch of Chandrayan-2. Furthermore, in 2019 the BJP led government finally gave some closure to the people of Kashmir with the abolition of section 370 and declared Kashmir as a Union Territory.
The 2010s were responsible for the evolution of human lives in a multitude of ways. No one could have imagined that SMS packs for our mobile phones would be replaced by unlimited data packs or that our phones would become an essential part of our lives. The decade saw the rise of smartphones and downfall of popular companies like Blackberry and Nokia.  The internet became an integral part of our lives and with continuous innovations, it is becoming even more necessary so much so that the Delhi government has set up wi-fi hotspots all over the capital.

We grew mentally and socially gave space to women to participate and contribute to the boundless growth of the nation, be it the economy, or the sports and the house of a poor man. We lifted ourselves outside the drench of superstitions and focused on the optimistic patterns of life.

As the year and the decade draws to a close in this chilling and almost historical winter season no one knows how the next decade would shape up. But hopefully, it would be the continuation of the rights and correction of the wrongs.
